Our new Grape Arbor : : September 5, 2010

This is all about our new grape arbor. I don't know how many of you saw the arbor that was there when we moved in, but it was pretty bad. We decided that we would replace it with an arbor of the following dimensions: 8'W x 4'D x 7'H. It has lattice-work for the grape vine to climb and two benches to sit on.

Kelly and I decided that we would build this for our anniversary. We thought that instead of spending several hundred dollars on a hotel or B&B we'd rather have something we could keep and enjoy for years to come. So, I started designing. Over the course of the weekend (we did this Memorial Day Weekend), we went to Home Depot several times. One time I even found out (the hard way) that 8' 2x4's fit into my car with the hatch closed. Lucky for me Kelly wasn't there because they had to go right into the passenger seat. Did you know that Home Depot won't cut pressure treated lumber? Anyway, after 3 boxes of decking screws, dozens of cuts with my circular saw, and hours of painting we finally had a nice frame. We began work on cutting and installing the latticework.

Let me tell you - through this project, I learned a number of things. The first is that if I ever do a project of this size again I will purchase a table saw first. That would make things a lot easier. I would also make sure I paint every surface of every board twice before starting - maybe a week before to give it time to completely cure. I would also have more than just 1 guy there when it was time to move the thing into place. Oh well - all of those are things I can do next time. The grape vine has grown excessively since we placed it on the new arbor and it has quite a few grapes on it too. You'll have to drop by and check it out if you're ever in Mansfield, OH.
