A New Hobby : : August 24, 2010 |
| I've recently (over the past 6 months) taken up a new hobby of sorts... that is to say I've begun drinking Scotch. I say hobby and not habit because I really only drink once in a while and when I do, it is something I truly enjoy. Below, I've listed a few that I've tried and several I'd like to try (with approximate prices for those looking for birthday gift ideas). Scotch I've tried: Aberlour 10 - I bought a bottle of this after initially getting hooked on Scotch at a wedding reception where I tried my first top-shelf single-malt scotch. Bought it at Kroger for about $40 and I think it's wonderful. The nose is very flowery with a bit of honeysuckle. Palate is sweet and dry - honey and grass. Reminds me of hiking through "the woods" out back when I was a kid. Finish is a bit strong but goes down well and gives a decent lingering warmth which fades slowly. This goes excellent with chocolate and mint (or even better, double chocolate mint-chocolate chip cookies). I usually drink it neat but sometimes with a single ice-cube. Glenfiddich 15 - I tried this at Sweeney's Too on Valentine's Day. $6 for a generous dram, neat. Went well with dessert but the palate is too woody, oaky for me. Worth a try but I don't think I'll buy a bottle. Finish was spicy - even fiery. Not my favorite but I'll definitely drink it if it's being served. Macallan 12 - Last night, I drove over to Kroger after reading the praises of Macallan 12 on various blogs and purchased a bottle for $50. Had a dram while Kelly and I watched some TV. The nose is significantly less complex than the Aberlour 10 but was inviting none the less. Palate was mellow, orange, glaze. Finish was incredibly smooth with a fire in the belly that rivals a piping hot cup of Apple Cider after trudging through the snow. In fact, it's so smooth (read: easy to drink) that I had a second dram before we finished our show. I had this with a single ice-cube but I think I'll try it neat next time to improve the nose and palate. Scotch I'd like to try and approx bottle price: Macallan 25 Yr - $400 (I wish) Bruichladdich 20 Yr - $140 (maybe someday) Talisker 18 Yr - $70 (now we're getting reasonable) Longmorn 15 Yr - $55 (would make a nice gift) Cragganmore 12 Yr - $42 (affordable even) Scotch that used to be in the above list (Scotch I've acquired recently): Aberlour A'Bunadh Balvenie Doublewood 12 |
